Dear San Diego,

Here's the lowdown on all the cross-cultural events happening in our lovely city!

On Saturday, the House of England will be holding their annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages. Also on Saturday, there will be a Cervantes Festival and Read-a-thon at the Mission Valley Library. Sunday, the WorldBeat Cultural Center’s 34th Annual Global Earth Day Festival will take place. Across the park at the International Cottages, the House of Palestine will hold its annual Lawn Program. Monday, at UCSD, there will be an Egyptian Open House hosted by the Egyptian Student Association. Next Thursday, the WOW Festival kicks off at UCSD.

Tonight, the Center for World Music Passport Series moves to the Mingei Museum for a performance of Bulgarian folk music by Ivan and Tzvetanka. Remember that you can get a discount if you use the code WVP10 when you purchase your ticket(s). Also tonight, there will be a Grand Violin Duo Concert by Sri Ganesh and Sri Kumaresh at Royal India. On Saturday, Ivan and Tzvetanka will give a Hungarian music vocal workshop at the First United Methodist Church. Other music and dance events on Saturday include a traditional Syrian dance performance by Al Samah at Woo Studios and Raga Resonance, a classical Indian music concert at the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living in Encinitas. On Sunday, at the House of Ukraine, there will be a Bandura concert replete with storytelling. Tuesday, awesomely talented Ali Paris will give a qanun concert at the Del Mar Library. Also on Tuesday, Italian operatic pop trio Il Volo will perform at the Civic Theatre. Next Thursday, American Idol-winning Hawaiian singer Im Tongi will be at the Belly Up. The San Diego Arab Film Festival wraps up this weekend at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park. Tonight at the Porto Vista Hotel, they will screen the film Crazy Rich Asians.

A nice array of theatrical offerings are happening, including some plays for the younger set (or the young at heart). Matilda the Musical Jr. will be at The Bornemann in San Marcos (tonight and Saturday), Fences at the Old Globe, Disney's MOANA Jr at Theatre for Young Professionals, Monty Python's Spamalot! (School Edition) will be performed at La Costa Canyon High School through next Saturday, and Beau Jest at the North Coast Rep gets underway next Wednesday with performances through mid-May.

Talks around town include a talk on Chinese Global Environmentalism tonight at UCSD, a panel discussion on Centering Humanity at the Mingei on Monday, a talk at USD on Reimagining Engineering Through Indigenous Use of Materials, and next Friday, Warwick's and Writer's Symposium by the Sea present bestselling guidebook author and activist Rick Steves, who will discuss his new book On the Hippie Trail.

On Saturday there will be a Bard Birthday Party at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Also on Saturday, comic Naomi Watanabe at Observatory North Park on Saturday (nearly sold out), and Bloom Bash next Saturday at the San Diego Museum of Art.

Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular, we are seeking our readers' help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!

Recipe of the Month

Our recipe for this month is for the Tahitian national dish, Ia Ota, or Poisson Cru. The dish is made from raw ahi tuna (yellowfin tuna), assorted vegetables, lime juice, and coconut milk. It is light and tasty, perfect for a summer repast on the veranda.

CD of the Month

Our international CD of the month is for Fatou by Fatoumata Diawara. Th Malian singer-songwriter's recording debut is a stripped-down, acoustic album that puts her voice and songwriting front and center. Drawing on Wassoulou musical traditions, the songs blend gentle guitar, subtle rhythms, and lyrics that address themes of migration, women’s rights, and personal independence. The result is an intimate and accessible recording that offers a clear window into contemporary West African music.

Book of the Month

Our international book suggestion for this month is The Sisters by Jonas Hassen Khemiri. The novel follows three Swedish-Tunisian sisters from childhood into adulthood as their lives diverge across Sweden, Tunisia, and the United States. Moving across decades, it examines how family ties, cultural identity, and personal choices shape who they become.
